The Berlin prosecutor's office has stopped all investigations related to the activities of the Russian Center for Science and Culture (RCSC, "Russian House") in the German capital. The department reported this to the Bild newspaper.
“Russia House” is the informal name for the foreign representative offices of Rossotrudnichestvo, a federal agency that is engaged in “strengthening Russia’s humanitarian influence in the world.” In July last year, it came under EU sanctions .
In January 2023, an investigation began against the Russia House on suspicion of circumventing sanctions. However, now the authorities have stopped “all investigations” against the Russia House and Rossotrudnichestvo. As the prosecutor's office explained to Bild, the reason is that they have diplomatic status.
Former member of the Bundestag from the Green party Volker Beck, who filed a complaint against the Russia House in January, told the newspaper that he had already filed a complaint against this decision. “If the leaders of the Russia House have diplomatic status, then they must be declared persona non grata and expelled. We cannot tolerate regular crimes committed under the protection of diplomatic status,” he said.
The Russian House in Berlin is located on Friedrichstrasse in the city center. It was opened in 1984, they organize conferences, symposiums, exhibitions, meetings with Russian politicians, artists and performers, according to the website of the Russian Embassy in Germany. At the institution you can also visit the library and enroll in language courses.
The “Russian House” was closed for a long time due to the pandemic, and after the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine , for security reasons and fears for employees, the DIRECTOR of the institution, Pavel Izvolsky, writes Berliner Zeitung. The center reopened in September last year.
