US President Donald Trump has asked Senate Republicans not to bring a bill to a vote that would tighten sanctions against Russia, according to Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker (R-S.C.).
"I know he has requested that Leader Thune (John Thune, the Republican majority leader in the upper chamber of Congress. - ) not bring up the bill this week," the lawmaker said at an online meeting with the Washington-based Defense Writers Group ( quoted by TASS ).
The bill in question was drafted by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal. it calls for 500% tariffs on imports from countries that purchase oil, petroleum products, natural gas, uranium, and other goods from Russia. According to the authors, their bill has the support of 82 senators.
Graham believes the measures included in the bill will be "devastating" for the Russian economy. According to the senator, the bill is intended to help Trump secure a peace agreement between Moscow and Kyiv. Keith Kellogg, the US presidential envoy for Ukraine , announced yesterday that the sanctions against Russia are fully prepared; all that remains is for Congress to approve them and Trump to endorse them.
Trump himself said he didn't yet know whether he would support the bill. Previously, he explained that the US was not tightening sanctions against Russia so as not to undermine efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.REUTERS wrote that Trump refuses to impose new sanctions because he hopes to restore economic relations between Washington and Moscow.
Russian authorities consider Western sanctions illegal. The Kremlin has stated that attempts to pressure Moscow are "futile."
