The United States will impose new sanctions on Russia if it deems it necessary, US President Donald Trump told reporters.
He declined to specify whether he supports a new bill being developed in the US Senate that would tighten sanctions against Russia.
"We'll see. <...> I'll use it if necessary," Trump responded to a question about his position on the document.
The president was asked whether he had discussed with the upper chamber of Congress a possible easing of the proposed sanctions. Trump said he had not. The Wall Street Journal previously reported that the US administration was trying to pressure Republican Senator Lindsey Graham to significantly water down the bill.
According to the president, he will make the decision regarding new restrictions personally. "They have a bill, and it's up to me. It's my choice," Trump emphasized.
He called the document "very strong."
REUTERS reported that Trump is refusing to impose new sanctions because he hopes to restore economic relations between Washington and Moscow. The Republican himself explained that the US is not tightening sanctions against Russia so as not to undermine efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine . The Kremlin considers Western sanctions illegal.
