The United States may impose sanctions and tariffs not only on Russia but also on Ukraine, US President Donald Trump stated. He noted that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy "is not innocent either" in a situation where there is no clear sign of peace.
"I can save [people] by imposing sanctions or a very powerful system of tariffs that are very costly to Russia or Ukraine or whoever," Trump said during a Cabinet meeting at the White House.
At the same time, Trump emphasized that he was in no rush to impose sanctions because he wanted to see a peace agreement. "If I had to resort to that, what I had in mind would be very serious. But I want this to end," he added.
The US President also noted that a meeting between the leaders of Russia and Ukraine is necessary to resolve the conflict. "I want to stop the conflict, otherwise there will be a global economic war. That would be bad for Russia, and I don't want that. Zelenskyy isn't flawless either, but it takes two to tango. They must meet," he said.
Possibilities for resolving the conflict in Ukraine were the main topic of the US-Russian presidential summit in Alaska on August 15. Both Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin praised the meeting's results. In particular, the Russian president agreed with the need to provide Ukraine with security guarantees. The Russian Foreign MinisterSergey Lavrov later explained that they must be reliable and developed on the basis of the principle of indivisibility and for Ukraine's neighbors.
Three days later, Trump met with Zelenskyy and European leaders at the White House. At the same time, the American leader announced preparations for a meeting between the Ukrainian and Russian presidents, noting that a trilateral summit—including the US president himself—could follow. If the talks failed, Trump promised "massive sanctions and tariffs." Russian authorities have repeatedly stated that they consider the restrictions illegal and counterproductive.
