David Arakhamia, the head of the Ukrainian delegation at negotiations with Russia on the conflict settlement, wrote a letter in support of billionaire Roman Abramovich, who is now trying to challenge the EU sanctions against him in COURT, reports The Times, citing documents.
Arakhamia points out that Abramovich played a "positive role" in the negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv, writes The Times. So, according to him, with the assistance of Abramovich, agreements were reached that helped establish "humanitarian corridors through which more than 400 thousand civilians were evacuated." Also, the efforts of the Russian billionaire led to several exchanges of prisoners of war, thanks to which several hundred people were released. Abramovich still continues to actively participate in the negotiation process, and also supports humanitarian efforts, Arakhamia points out.
According to the newspaper, in a lawsuit that was filed with the European Court in Luxembourg in late May, as one of their arguments in favor of lifting the sanctions, the billionaire's lawyers point out that the restrictions prevent Abramovich from participating in peace negotiations and humanitarian activities: legal firms and consultants have been hesitant to work with Abramovich, and he himself cannot move around the world as freely as he did before they were introduced.
Abramovich also insists that EU sanctions against him are discriminatory and based on false claims that he is close to President Vladimir Putin.
Lawyers name Abramovich one of Britain's top taxpayers
In addition, the entrepreneur's lawsuit also states that he pays much more taxes in Britain and the EU than in Russia. So, he paid 1.75 billion pounds in taxes (more than $2 billion) in the UK over the past 20 years, and the amount of taxes that he and his companies paid to the country in 2019-2010 (41 million pounds, or $51.4 million) , make him one of the country's top 25 taxpayers in this tax period, Abramovich's lawyers said in a statement.
RBC sent a request to the representative of Abramovich and the deputy of Arakhamia.
Am I a bad parent? Instructions Pro Russian consultants separated from global offices:Abramovich's participation in the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine became known at the end of March, when he appeared at the Dolmabahce Palace right before the start of negotiations between delegations in Istanbul. Mikhail Podolyak, an adviser to the head of the office of the President of Ukraine, said on March 31 that the businessman is an “extremely effective” intermediary. Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov said that the businessman is not an official member of the Russian delegation, but he was "involved in ensuring certain contacts" between the parties.
Sanctions on Abramovich were imposed by the European Union and Great Britain in March. The United States has not yet imposed restrictions on him. At the end of March, The Wall Street Journal, citing sources, reported that the United States was supposed to do this simultaneously with European countries, but postponed the imposition of sanctions against Abramovich at the request of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to the newspaper, he told US President Joe Biden that the Russian billionaire could mediate a settlement between Moscow and Kyiv.
Peskov said that Kyiv "freezes negotiations" Politics
In mid-April, after Russian-Ukrainian talks had stalled, the American magazine Fortune, citing informed sources, wrote that Abramovich visited Kyiv to discuss the possibility of resuming Russian-Ukrainian talks, which had stalled in early April. However, the representative of the businessman then denied these data. “Mr. Abramovich is not in Kyiv and has not been there recently,” he told RBC.
At the end of April, BLOOMBERG reported, citing sources, that in the United States, high-ranking officials were again pushing for sanctions against Abramovich, since his trip to Kyiv did not lead to significant results: he did not meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but instead spoke with Andrey Yermak, head of its administration.
