The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Metropolitan District of Columbia rejected the appeal of Russian businessman Oleg Deripaska against the decision of the federal district court that refused to lift sanctions against the businessman. The verdict is published on the website of the Court of Appeal.
“We decide to confirm the decision of the district court,” the decision of the troika of judges of the appeals court says. Based on the verdict, "there is no evidence" that the US government introduced restrictive measures against the businessman "for far-fetched reasons."
Australia imposed sanctions against the NWF, as well as Deripaska and Vekselberg Politics
The court, the verdict notes, considers that "[Deripaska's] long-term pattern of behavior persisted even after the issuance of the decree imposing sanctions." “Given the absence of any evidence that such behavior has ceased, consideration should be given to past behavior and its steady course prior to the imposition of sanctions,” the document says.
Deripaska sued the US Treasury in March 2019. In the lawsuit, the businessman said he was the victim of a political struggle in the United States due to alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Deripaska said that the sanctions against him were unfair and illegal, as a result of which he suffered damages of $ 7.5 billion, which at that time was approximately 81% of his fortune.
