The United States is imposing sanctions on UN Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese for "illegal and shameful attempts to provoke the International Criminal COURT to take action" against US and Israeli leaders and companies, Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote on the social network X.
“Today, I am imposing sanctions on UN Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese for her illegal and disgraceful efforts to initiate prosecutions at the International Criminal Court against US and Israeli officials, companies, and leaders,” Rubio said.
He added that the United States will always "support our partners in their right to self-defense" and "defend our sovereignty and the sovereignty of our allies."
Last week, Albanese called on the International Criminal Court to "investigate and prosecute corporate executives and/or corporate entities" accusing Israel of committing war crimes in its war with Hamas, Politico reported.
In a report titled "From the Economy of Occupation to the Economy of Genocide," Albanese identified 48 corporate entities, from weapons manufacturers to financial firms, accused of profiting from collaboration with the Israeli government.
Appointed to the position in 2022, Albanese has called for sanctions and an arms embargo against Israel since the full-scale invasion of the Gaza Strip in October 2023. The Israeli government banned Albanese from entering the country in February 2024 after she publicly stated that “the victims of the October 7 massacre were not killed because they were Jewish, but in response to Israeli oppression.”
In February, Israel withdrew from the UN Human Rights Council. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said that “this body has focused on attacking a democratic country and promoting anti-Semitism instead of advancing human rights.” US President Donald Trump had previously withdrawn his country from the council .
