The US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control has imposed sanctions on the Nicaraguan Attorney General's Office and nine officials for holding "sham elections." This is stated in the publication on the website of the US Treasury.

The sanctions provide for the blocking of the assets of the Prosecutor General's Office and members of the country's government (if any in the United States), including enterprises in which more than 50% are owned by persons under sanctions. The Treasury has banned them from conducting any financial transactions in the United States. Sanctions may be lifted if "the authoritarian regime shows positive changes."

Biden called the past elections in Nicaragua a "pantomime" Politics

The US Treasury explained that from early October 2020 to June 2021, the National Assembly of Nicaragua, which is controlled by President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo, approved six laws. They led to the persecution of oppositionists and deprived opponents of the chances of winning the elections in November 2021, according to Washington.

Since May of this year, almost 40 oppositionists have been imprisoned in Nicaragua, including seven presidential candidates, civil activists, students and journalists, follows from the message. The authorities did not allow the parties of opponents to the elections and falsified the results, the Ministry of Finance noted.
