The United States suspended sanctions on Nord Stream 2 because they were unlikely to prevent the construction of the pipeline. This was stated by the HEAD of the press service of the State Department, Ned Price, reports TASS.

“We recognize that the sanctions could hardly have prevented the construction of the pipeline. Therefore, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken approved the suspension [of sanctions] as part of President Biden's commitment to repairing relations with our European allies,” Price said.

Sanctions against the construction of the US gas pipeline began to be introduced in 2019. At first, sanctions were imposed against foreign companies that provide their specialized vessels for laying Nord Stream 2 pipes in the Baltic Sea. After the sanctions came into force, the Swiss Allseas suspended the laying of the pipe.

Nord Stream 2 consists of two gas pipeline strings with a length of more than 1.2 thousand km each, they are laid along the bottom of the Baltic Sea. Gas will be transported through them to Germany through the sea territories of RUSSIA, Germany, Finland, Sweden and Denmark. The laying of the first thread was completed in early June. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of August.
