The United States intends to announce new sanctions against Russia on Tuesday as a response to Moscow's recognition of the independence of the DPR and LPR, REUTERS writes, citing a statement by a White House spokesman.
“We plan to announce new sanctions against Russia tomorrow (Tuesday, February 22 - ) as a response to today's decisions and actions of Moscow,” said a US administration official. He also added that Washington is coordinating the forthcoming statement with allies and partners.
Earlier, President Joe Biden signed a decree imposing sanctions on the DNR and LNR. According to the provisions of the document, American citizens are prohibited from trading with both, investing in their economies, as well as exporting American-made goods there or importing goods from the republics into the United States. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken explained that the decree is aimed at preventing Russia from benefiting from the recognition of the DNR and LNR.
What sanctions may threaten Russia for recognizing the DPR and LPR Economics
Experts interviewed by RBC expect the introduction of various sanctions scenarios due to the aggravation of the situation in Ukraine. For example, Maria Shagina, a visiting research fellow at the Finnish Institute of International Relations and a specialist in sanctions, believes that in response to the recognition of the DPR and LPR, the United States will apply a moderate package of sanctions. Within its framework, the expert expects restrictions against several banks, as well as additional restrictions on the EXPORT of technological products to Russia. On the part of the EU, Shagina suggests the introduction of cosmetic measures against certain politicians and officials.
