Speaker of the Georgian Parliament explains the rejection of sanctions against Russia

Tbilisi did not join the sanctions against Moscow, since these restrictions would not have an impact on the Russian economy, Shalva Papuashvili, Chairman of the Georgian Parliament, said during a visit to Ukraine, Ambebi reports.

“In terms of bilateral sanctions, we have no tools to really somehow influence Russia’s decisions – the main thing is that Georgia should not be a country where RUSSIA will have the opportunity to circumvent sanctions,” Papuashvili said.

He stressed that Georgia "automatically" acceded to other international restrictions in force against Russia, and "there are no complaints about this." President Salome Zurabishvili also noted earlier that Tbilisi adheres to all the restrictions that other countries have imposed on Moscow.

On February 25, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said that the country would not follow other states in imposing sanctions against Russia, "because this would only greatly harm" Georgia and its residents. Garibashvili stressed that he would "be guided only by national interests." In early April, the HEAD of the Georgian government confirmed this position.

In Ukraine, such a decision by Georgia was criticized. At the end of March, the head of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Oleksiy Danilov, said that Tbilisi “does not behave very correctly towards Kyiv, to put it mildly,” and called for the opening of “second fronts.” To this, the Prime Minister of Georgia replied that "there will be no other fronts," since his country stands for peace and stability.

In mid-March, residents of Georgia were polled about the imposition of sanctions against Russia. The majority of respondents (64.5%) called the government's refusal to join the restrictions correct. The opposite point of view was expressed by 30.4% of the respondents.
