The media learned about US plans to avoid imposing sanctions against Nord Stream 2 AG

The administration of US President Joe Biden will abandon plans to impose sanctions on Nord Stream 2 AG, the operator of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, and its chief executive Matthias Warnig, Axios reports, citing two sources who were notified of such a decision.

Sources of the publication said that the State Department will soon send its mandatory 90-day report to Congress with a list of organizations participating in the Nord Stream 2 project, against which sanctions are expected to be imposed. The State Department admits that Nord Stream 2 AG (the legal entity in charge of the project) and its CEO are engaged in sanctions activities, the sources said. However, the State Department will refuse to apply these sanctions, citing the national interests of the United States, the interlocutors of the publication said. According to them, sanctions will be imposed against several vessels participating in the Nord Stream 2 project.

This planned move also creates a strange situation in which the Biden administration will punish the ships involved in the construction of Nord Stream 2, but refuses to impose sanctions on the company in charge of the project.

Axios informants said that Biden does not want to break off his relations with Germany because of Nord Stream 2.
