The European Union should take preventive measures against Russia in the form of disconnection from the international payment system SWIFT. This was stated by former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Jan Brzezinski, son of former adviser to the 39th US President Jimmy Carter Zbigniew Brzezinski, on the air of the Open Ukraine YouTube channel.
“We must now take certain economic measures to demonstrate the credibility of these threats [to impose sanctions]. It could be stopping payments for gas and oil , or cutting Russia off from SWIFT for a few days. These steps should demonstrate that the larger sanctions we are threatening are real,” Brzezinski said.
In his opinion, in relation to Russia, it is necessary to use a comprehensive approach, which includes steps to prevent the "invasion" of Ukraine and to prepare sanctions. Brzezinski also suggested that the West could take a series of "serious military measures" to underline its commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty and independence. In his opinion, NATO should concentrate more forces in Eastern European countries such as Poland and Romania, as well as interact more with the Ukrainian military forces, including conducting more joint exercises.
In addition, the West should get involved in the information war - which, according to Brzezinski, is being waged by Russia - "to show Putin that we, too, can play this game."
