The Accounts Chamber warned of a new fuel crisis in Russia

The agency saw the risks of rising fuel prices by analogy with 2018. Then, to overcome the crisis, the government developed a damper mechanism

Russia could face the risk of a repeat of the 2018 fuel crisis. This is stated in the annual report of the Accounts Chamber (AC), which was reviewed by RBC.

“Currently, there are risks of a repeat increase in retail fuel prices and, as a result, the emergence of social tension,” the document says.

The joint venture cited the risks of rising fuel prices as one of the "aggregated issues" of the audit last year. The department recalled that in the spring of 2018, Russians saw a sharp increase in gasoline prices against the backdrop of an increase in world oil prices , which prompted the government to take a number of measures that helped stabilize the situation in the domestic market. An important role in this was played by the damper mechanism developed by the Cabinet of Ministers, with the help of which it was possible to minimize the effect of fluctuations in world oil prices on the cost of fuel in Russia.
