The decision of the American Johnson & Johnson to suspend the supply of one model of contact lenses will not affect the satisfaction of patient demand in Russia, Roszdravnadzor told RBC.

The department noted that in total, the State Register of Medical Devices contains information about 134 types of contact lenses, 13 of which are manufactured by Johnson & Johnson. The company itself, according to Roszdravnadzor, announced the withdrawal from the assortment of only one model of contact lenses - Acuvue Oasys 1-Day with HydraLuxe.

“Thus, there is no sign of shortage of the medical device “Contact Lenses” in the Russian Federation. Roszdravnadzor, together with the Ministry of HEALTH of Russia, continues to constantly monitor the availability of medicines and medical devices throughout the country,” the press service emphasized.

Experts interviewed by RBC also stated that there is currently no shortage of contact lenses in Russia. “Johnson & Johnson has warned partners to suspend contact lens imports. However, to date, imported lenses are sold in sufficient quantities on the Russian market, so we do not see the risk of defects in this product, ”Dmitry Pogrebinsky, CEO of the pharmaceutical company Protek, told RBC .

Boris Popov, CEO of the Zdravcity online pharmacy, clarified that there has been no trend towards an increase or decrease in the average cost of Acuvue lenses since the beginning of the year. “At the same time, since February, we have been recording a reduction in the average daily balance of brand positions sold on Zdravcity — since January, it has halved. However, there is no shortage of this category of goods. There are enough analogues available on the marketplace - over 4 thousand items of lenses of various types, optical power and color made in the usa , Korea, Japan, Singapore," he said.

The fact that the American company Johnson & Johnson (produces lenses under the brands Acuvue Oasys and Acuvue True Eyes) is going to suspend the import of lenses, Kommersant FM reported on May 24, citing the owners of optics stores. Those, in turn, received such information from the suppliers of Johnson & Johnson products. Later, the pharmaceutical company Protek, which acts as the official distributor of Johnson & Johnson products, spoke about the same.

This came after the US Department of Industry and Trade last week expanded sanctions on the import of certain goods into Russia. Contact lenses were included in the list: now, in order to EXPORT them, manufacturers must obtain export licenses, there are no direct restrictions on supplies.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia promised to promptly take measures to include lenses in the list of parallel imports. They explained that according to the US licensing policy, if the supplier of the product proves that the product is intended to ensure the health and safety of Russian citizens, then the license can be granted on an individual basis. “In this sense, the provision of market products for citizens, obviously, should fall under the exception,” the department concluded.
