Rospatent denied Renault's request to register the modified trademark.

French automaker Renault has received a preliminary refusal from the Federal Service for Intellectual Property (Rospatent) to register its Renault trademark in Russia, RIA Novosti reports, citing the electronic database of the International Bureau (IB) of WIPO.

In October 2024 , the automaker filed a trademark application for the purpose of selling and manufacturing vehicles. In April 2025, it received a preliminary refusal after a confusingly similar earlier trademark was discovered. It was also discovered to be owned by Renault.

Renault left Russia in the spring of 2022 after the military operation in Ukraine began . It transferred its 67.69% stake in AvtoVAZ to FSUE NAMI, and the Moscow plant to the Moscow government. Rostec retained the remaining AvtoVAZ shares. Renault has a share buyback option within six years, but it will not be able to acquire the Moscow plant.

In February 2025, Renault CEO Luca de Meo, in an interview with the Financial Times, did not rule out the possibility of the company's return to Russia. He noted that the situation was changing rapidly and the company could take advantage of emerging business opportunities.

At the same time, AvtoVAZ CEO Maxim Sokolov announced that his company did not expect to resume cooperation with its former partner. He suggested that the French "assess the volume of investments made by both the state and the company itself over the past period" since Renault's departure from Russia.

In mid-June, First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov told RBC that the company would likely not return to the country's market, given its unfriendly actions toward Russia.
