The European Union is preparing a fifth package of sanctions against RUSSIA because of the events in Ukraine and is discussing the possibility of imposing an embargo on Russian oil, Reuters reported, citing sources.

“We are working on a fifth round of sanctions and many new names are being proposed,” a senior European diplomat told the agency.

The discussion on whether to impose restrictions on the import of Russian oil will take place at a meeting of EU foreign ministers on March 21, ahead of US President Joe Biden's scheduled visit to Brussels on March 24.

The Baltic countries, including Lithuania, insist on an oil embargo, agency sources said. Germany warns against quick action in this direction due to high energy prices in Europe. As noted by Reuters, Germany is more dependent on Russian gas than other EU countries and is the EU's largest buyer of oil from Russia.
