Reuters found out about the EU red line for imposing sanctions against China

Washington never provided evidence to Brussels that Chinaconsiders the possibility of supplying weapons to Russia, and makes conflicting statements about this, writes Politico, citing sources in the EU

The European Union will respond by imposing sanctions on China if it crosses the red line and arms Russia, Reuters reported, citing an unnamed senior EU official. At the same time, Politico writes that officials and diplomats in Brussels would like to see concrete evidence of such actions by Beijing before resorting to restrictive measures.

Washington has evidence that China is considering providing military assistance to Russia, which could mean "from ammunition to weapons," Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said in mid-February. According to him, the United States has evidence that Beijing is already providing non-lethal assistance to Moscow. As for the latter, according to Bloomberg, the US authorities collected relevant information and presented it to China.

Beijing called Blinken's statement a spread of disinformation, while the Kremlin quoted a corresponding Chinese statement saying that there was nothing to add to it. Kiev reported that they had no evidence that China was considering providing military assistance to Russia.

Politico wrote the day before that speculation about China's potential arms supplies to Russia will be one of the topics of the upcoming meeting between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Joe Biden. At the same time, an unnamed EU diplomat told the publication that Washington had not provided Brussels with any evidence that Beijing was considering taking such a step.

“And I think if you look at the messages from our friends in the US, you will see even slightly contradictory messages at times,” the source said.

The interlocutor of the publication indicated that Biden's statements on this topic were "much softer." So, Biden, for example, previously said that he did not expect "a major initiative from China to supply weapons to Russia."

The United States and the EU began to supply weapons and military equipment to Ukraine after the start of the Russian military operation. Moscow criticizes Western countries for this and points out that Western assistance to Kyiv will not interfere with the solution of the tasks of the operation. The Chinese authorities are in favor of a peaceful settlement in Ukraine and against the transfer of weapons to it, and in February presented their peace plan.
