Reuters learned the date of the introduction of US sanctions against Russia in the case of Navalny

The United States may impose sanctions on Russia due to the situation with the opposition leader Alexei Navalny on March 2. it is reported by REUTERS, citing two sources familiar with the matter.

Washington will impose sanctions under the Chemical and Biological Weapons Control Act of 1991 and two executive orders, sources said. One of them was signed after the annexation of Crimea to Russia in 2014 and provides for the possibility of imposing sanctions on Russian officials. The second concerns the fight against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

Earlier, CNN, citing two unnamed representatives of the administration of US President Joe Biden, reported that Washington was preparing to impose sanctions against Russia this week in connection with the situation with Navalny. According to the channel, the imposition of sanctions will take place in agreement with the European Union.

In early February, a group of US senators introduced a bill to Congress that would provide for sanctions against those involved in the poisoning and imprisonment of Navalny. Among the possible restrictions in the document are the freezing of assets and the denial of visas. The names and positions of those who may fall under the restrictions are not known.
