The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine appealed to the US Congress with an appeal to use all possible tools to stop the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. The resolution was published by the press service of the Verkhovna Rada.

According to the statement, the Ukrainian parliament asks the US authorities to apply sanctions against all project participants, in particular Nord Stream AG, in order to stop the construction of Nord Stream 2.

“We are convinced that the only long-term mechanism to ensure that RUSSIA does not use Nord Stream 2 as an energy weapon is to completely block the possibility of its completion and commissioning,” the document says. The Verkhovna Rada noted in the resolution that the United States, as a strategic partner of Ukraine, plays an important role in preventing Russia's hostile actions.

The Verkhovna Rada explained its request for sanctions by concern that the report of the US Congress on May 19 and the proposed sanctions do not include measures against Nord Stream AG.

The Verkhovna Rada claims that Russia is building a gas pipeline to create a mechanism for putting pressure on Ukraine and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, as well as to increase the dependence of the European Union countries on Russian gas supplies.
