President Vladimir Putin, at a meeting with participants in the Congress of Young Scientists, said that sanctions against Russia are often taken just like that, for no apparent reason. This is how the head of state commented on the decision of the US Department of Commerce to add the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) to the sanctions list. The transcript of the meeting is posted on the Kremlin website.
According to Putin, the sanctions against MIPT are an attempt to curb Russia's development from the outside, as the West is afraid of competition. “These restrictions, sanctions are being introduced under the pretext of ensuring the security of the United States. How does your institute [MIPT] threaten US security? Nothing, it's complete nonsense. There is only one explanation – an attempt to restrain development,” he said.
The President believes that Russia must strengthen its sovereignty in order to resist sanctions. In his opinion, the United States will sooner or later be forced to stop pursuing a policy of sanctions against Russia simply because of the objective situation in the world. “These sanctions are taken just like that. For no external reason. Sometimes one gets the impression that various political forces in the same States are simply competing with each other, showing their anti-Russian attitude, and thus earn domestic political points simply in the struggle between themselves, ”Putin added.

The head of state said that in the mid-1990s, Russia was good for everyone and everyone liked it, “when they sent us potatoes through humanitarian aid.” “Thank you for this too, many did it sincerely, I know, I’m honest about this, because I talked with these people in St. Petersburg,” he said.
