Responsibility for the state of relations between Russia and Japan lies entirely with Moscow, and against this background, the decision to impose sanctions against Tokyo is “absolutely unacceptable,” said Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. His words are quoted by NHK.
“It was Russia that resorted to military means and caused this whole situation. And although the responsibility for the current state of Russian-Japanese relations lies entirely with Russia, it made a similar statement. This is absolutely unacceptable,” Kishida said.
Speaking about the possible introduction of new sanctions against Russia, the prime minister noted that Japan would take the appropriate decision in cooperation with the international community, in particular with the G7 countries.
Japan for the first time in 19 years called the Kuriles "illegally occupied" Politics
This is how Kishida reacted to the new Russian sanctions. The day before, on May 4, Russia banned 63 Japanese citizens from entering the country, including the Prime Minister himself, Secretary General of the Cabinet of Ministers Hirokazu Matsuno, Foreign Minister Yoshimase Hayashi, Finance Minister Shun'ichi Suzuki and others. Members of both houses of the Japanese parliament, the head of the association for policy development regarding the problem of the northern territories (as Tokyo calls the South Kuriles) Mamoru Morohoshi and the heads of major media outlets: Sankei newspapers, media holdings Yomiuri Group and Nikkei and others were also subject to restrictions.
These measures are taken in response to the "unprecedented anti-Russian campaign," the Russian Foreign Ministry said. Earlier, Japan imposed several packages of sanctions against Russia. The top leadership of the country, in particular President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, as well as a number of businessmen and heads of companies, fell under the restrictions. Sanctions also apply to the Central Bank and dozens of Russian enterprises.
