Russia's assets frozen by the European Union will sooner or later have to be returned. Kirill Logvinov, Acting Permanent Representative of RUSSIA to the EU, expressed this opinion in an interview with RIA Novosti.
“The EU will be forced to compensate Russia for losses from the pocket of European taxpayers. True, the latter are unlikely to even guess about it, ”said Logvinov.
The diplomat called the asset freeze itself illegal and contrary to international law. “No matter how much the European Union, the G-7 consult, no matter what form they try to invent for the seizure of Russian assets, any “thieves’ scheme” by definition contradicts generally accepted legal norms,” he said.
The EU began freezing the assets of the Central Bank and some sanctioned businessmen last year in response to a Russian special operation in Ukraine. After that, proposals were repeatedly made in the West and in Kyiv to use them for the restoration of Ukraine.
In autumn, the EU Council instructed the European Commission to develop proposals for financing the restoration of Ukraine at the expense of frozen Russian assets. Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov then accused the West of stealing Russia's assets. “These are absolutely illegal actions, they are contrary to international law, this is nothing more than an encroachment on property – in this case state property – and on private property,” the Kremlin spokesman said.
