The US is ready to lift sanctions on Iran if it does the same. This was stated by US Permanent Representative to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield at a meeting of the UN Security Council.
“President [US Joe] Biden has made it clear that he is ready to return to US compliance if Iran does the same. We are fully prepared to lift sanctions that are inconsistent with our obligations under the JCPOA, which will allow Iran to benefit economically from the deal,” Thomas-Greenfield said (quoted by RIA Novosti).
Biden expressed readiness to return to a deal with Iran Politics
In 2015, the United States, France, United Kingdom, Germany, CHINA , RUSSIA and Iran signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in which they agreed not to impose sanctions on Tehran in exchange for its refusal to develop nuclear weapons. The JCPOA envisaged, in particular, the limitation of uranium enrichment and the access of inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to all nuclear facilities in the country.
In 2018, under former President Donald Trump, the US withdrew from the deal, accusing Iran of violating the agreement, and renewed sanctions against it. In response, Iran abandoned some of its obligations and resumed uranium enrichment in excess of the permitted level.
