The European Commission will not include restrictions on the country's nuclear industry and its participants in the new package of sanctions against Russia, Politico reports citing three diplomats.
Initially, the executive body of the European Union told the countries of the bloc that it would try to develop measures against the civilian nuclear sector in Russia, but the plan failed, the newspaper writes. “Unfortunately, the nuclear sector is not included in this proposal,” one diplomat said, commenting on the forthcoming tenth round of sanctions.
Hungary opposed such restrictions for a long time. “Their nuclear power plant [Paks] belongs to Rosatom, and they say that it produces 50% of the electricity in the country,” one of the diplomats clarified the position of Budapest. To prevent Hungary from imposing a veto, Brussels considered the possibility of including individual employees and other companies on the sanctions list, not the entire Rosatom, but in the end decided not to do this.

France also called for caution in the sanctions in this area. Earlier this week, the country's Ministry of Economy noted that "many nuclear power plants use Russian nuclear fuel," writes Politico.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky called for sanctions against the Russian nuclear industry, speaking at a meeting of the European Council in Brussels. In February, Rosatom, its top managers and other companies came under Kyiv's restrictions. In response, the state corporation stated that "nuclear energy should be out of the political conjuncture."
According to the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the tenth package of EU sanctions against Russia involves the introduction of export restrictions for € 11 billion. Bloomberg reported that the measures will affect Alfa-Bank, Rosbank and Tinkoff Bank (according to Reuters, they can be disconnected from SWIFT); Russian citizens will also be banned from holding positions in European infrastructure companies. The package also includes new restrictions in the aviation industry, Politico wrote.
