Politico reported that the EU wants to turn the talks into a trap for Russia

European leaders don't believe Russia is serious about a peace deal, so their strategy is to "praise" US President Donald Trump until he comes to the same conclusion, Politico reports.

As the newspaper writes, Europe's main goal is to achieve tough economic sanctions against Russia if peace talks fail to produce results.

Earlier, The Telegraph reported that European leaders intend to impose sanctions against Russia if President Vladimir Putin refuses to participate in a trilateral meeting with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky and Trump.

After the summit with Zelensky and European leaders at the White House, Trump announced the start of preparations for a meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian leaders. The White House later stated that both the Ukrainian and Russian leaders had expressed their readiness for a personal meeting. The Kremlin did not comment on this information.

In mid-July, Trump announced that he would impose secondary tariffs “at about 100%” on Russia and its trading partners if there was no progress in resolving the conflict in Ukraine . He gave a deadline of 50 days, but later shortened it to 10-12.

At the same time, after the talks between Russia and the US in Alaska, the White House announced that Trump did not want to impose new sanctions. After the summit, the American leader and Putin spoke to the press. They both spoke positively about the talks.
