The US Department of Defense will ban its military bases in Europe from entering into contracts for the purchase of Russian energy resources. The Pentagon posted the relevant notice in the Federal Register, the ban will come into force on August 30.

“Final Changes to the Schedule to the Federal Defense Acquisition Regulation (DFARS) to Implement the FY 2020 Defense Section. This section prohibits contracts for the purchase of energy resources from the Russian Federation for US military bases in Europe.

The ban was introduced to ensure energy security in Europe and applies to all forms of energy resources. “Supplied energy refers to energy supplied <...> in any form and for any purpose, including heating, cooling and electricity,” the document says. The restrictions only apply to Europe. In particular, the ban will not apply to the Asian territory of Turkey. The Pentagon also indicated that they allow exceptions to the rules.

The ban was introduced as part of the implementation of the provisions of the defense budget for the 2020 fiscal year. The document is scheduled to be officially published on August 30.
