China opposes unilateral sanctions that have not received approval from the UN Security Council and calls on the Ukrainian side to correct its “erroneous policy,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said at a briefing.
"China calls on Ukraine to immediately correct its mistakes and eliminate the negative consequences. China will resolutely protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies," Guo Jiakun said ( quoted by Lianhe Zaobao).
This is how the Chinese Foreign Ministry responded to Ukraine's decision to impose restrictions on a number of Chinese companies. President Volodymyr Zelensky signed decrees on the introduction of new restrictions the day before. In this way, Kyiv synchronized restrictions from the 18th package of EU sanctions against eight individuals and 45 legal entities, including companies from RUSSIA, China, Iran and the UAE.
The European Union approved the 18th package of sanctions against Russia on July 18. The restrictions affected, among others, Chinese banks Suifenhe Rural Commercial Bank and Heihe Rural Commercial Bank and seven other Chinese companies engaged in trade with Russia. The Chinese authorities called the restrictions groundless. Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao made a representation to EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič.
The HEAD of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, called the new package of sanctions "one of the toughest." Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said that the EU had begun work on the next, 19th, package of sanctions against Russia. The Kremlin responded by saying that over the past three years, Russia has adapted to life under sanctions, although it considers such unilateral restrictions illegal.
