TOEFL organizer promised Russians the opportunity to take the exam remotely

The ETS company, which conducts the TOEFL English exam, will allow Russians and Belarusians to take it remotely from August 4.Conducting the face-to-face exam in these countries is not possible due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine

Citizens of Russia and Belarus will be able to take some versions of the TOEFL English exam remotely from August 4, the Educational Testing Service (ETS) said in a statement.

“ETS is amending its policy from March 2022 and will now allow Russian and Belarus test takers to register for the TOEFL iBT Home Edition, TOEFL Essentials and GRE Home Edition unless they have any financial barriers to doing so,” said TASS representative of the company.

He clarified that due to the ongoing Russian military operation in Ukraine, it is still impossible to pass the exam in centers located in Russia and Belarus. Those who want to take the TOEFL in person can do it in other countries.

Russians banned from registering for the English TOEFL exam Society

It became known yesterday that ETS banned Russian citizens from registering for the exam. When trying to register on the site, indicating Russian citizenship, users received a message in their personal account that access was restricted at the request of the Office for Foreign Assets Control, a division of the US Department of the Treasury .

TOEFL is taken to study or work in English-speaking countries, it is most often chosen for moving to the USA or Canada. In March, the organizers of the exam announced that they were suspending testing in Russia and Belarus as a sign of "solidarity with the people of Ukraine", while Russians and Belarusians still had the opportunity to take the exam abroad.
