US Secretary of State Marco Rubio supports the passage of South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham's bill imposing new sanctions against Russia, New Lines magazine reports, citing a source close to the Secretary of State. However, US President Donald Trump opposes such a measure, the publication notes.
"Notice how Rubio raises the sanctions issue almost daily. He's pushing for the swift passage of Graham's bill, which already has a veto-proof majority in the Senate," the source told the publication.
The bill in question calls for 500% tariffs on imports from countries purchasing oil , gas, uranium, and other resources from Russia. Graham believes the measures included in the bill will be "devastating" for the Russian economy. According to the senator, the bill is intended to help Trump secure a peace agreement between Moscow and Kyiv.
In early May, Trump suggested he might sign Graham's bill , but clarified that the decision would depend on Moscow's position on conflict resolution. Following a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the American leader announced that he had no intention of imposing anti-Russian sanctions at this time. In a subsequent conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, he noted that Moscow was serious about resolving the conflict in Ukraine, Axios reported.
Russian authorities consider Western sanctions illegal. The Kremlin has stated that attempts to pressure Moscow are "futile."
