Opposition leader Alexei Navalny gave his first interview from the colony to The New York Times (NYT), in which he stated that in addition to fighting corruption in RUSSIA, attention should be paid to poverty.

Once in the colony, Navalny says, he faced this issue personally, because he must "fit all monthly purchases in the prison store into the 9,000th limit." “It is poverty that most of all worries Russians. When I got here, I was convinced of this again,” Navalny said, noting that not only prisoners, but also employees of the colony, along with the medical staff, who have “beggarly salaries” face this here.

The victory over poverty, according to Navalny, can only be associated with economic growth. He, in his opinion, will be provided primarily by two factors:

- total deregulation of the economy and the liberation of business;
— investments in human capital (education and healthcare).
According to Navalny, the source of investment for human capital is "the insanely bloated military-police budget, now devouring 35% of the total budget."

Speaking about whether his main message has changed during his time in the colony, Navalny said that he still considers corruption one of the country's main problems.
