The restrictions were introduced "with the aim of ensuring the security of the Republic of Moldova and combating acts of corruption, taking into account attempts to undermine the rule of law and attempts to jeopardize the conditions for holding democratic, free and fair elections by individuals and legal entities," the document states.

The United States imposed sanctions against the Rossiya Segodnya media group, RIA Novosti, RT, Sputnik, and Ruptly in September. Washington claimed they were involved in "foreign malign influence campaigns and illegal cyber-activity designed to undermine the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States and its allies and partners around the world."
