Foreign Ministry considers attempts to remove Russia from Middle East issues nonsense

Attempts to remove RUSSIA from the process of resolving the crisis in the Middle East is political nonsense, according to a statement on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

“Any attempts to turn Russia off from the process of resolving the Palestinian-Israeli, Syrian or any other Middle East crisis is political nonsense,” the ministry said.

The Foreign Ministry expressed “regret and misunderstanding” due to such a step by Western countries and added that Russia has actively participated in the work of the committee since its foundation in 1993 and “made a significant, generally recognized contribution to creating a solid foundation for the implementation of the “two states” formula. Israel and Palestine.

In early December last year, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to organize a peace conference in Moscow to resolve the situation in the Middle East, Palestinian Ambassador to Russia Abdel Hafiz Nofal said.

He noted that the conference could be organized with the assistance of the "Middle East Quartet" - Russia, the United States , the European Union and the United Nations. Palestine, Nofal said, is interested in holding Quartet meetings at the level of foreign ministers to start a new phase of dialogue. He previously reported that Palestine does not intend to take part in peace talks if the United States is the only mediator in them.
