British Foreign Office says it's not easy to confiscate Russian assets

In November 2022, the British authorities announced the freezing of Russian assets in the amount of about $ 20 billion. Now the head of the British Foreign Office has admitted that it is “not so easy” to confiscate them, but consultations on this matter are underway

Confiscate frozen Russian assets in Britain is "not easy" because this practice has not been used in the past, British Foreign Secretary James Cleverley said. His speech was broadcast on the website of the House of Commons.

“The simple truth is that it is not as simple as the request (of the parliamentarian. -) suggests. The fact is that there have been conflicts in the world before. There were also guilty parties. But there has never been a confiscation of assets. We must be sure that we comply with domestic and international laws,” Cleverly said, when asked if the government has a plan to confiscate Russian assets.

The Foreign Minister also noted that the British government is carefully considering proposals on this issue, which are now being studied and verified by Britain's partners, and said that London would seek "punishment of Russia" for the conflict in Ukraine.

After the start of the military operation, Western countries, including the EU, the US and the UK, blocked about half of Russia's gold and foreign exchange reserves, as well as the property and accounts of Russian entrepreneurs who fell under the sanctions . In November 2022, London announced the freezing of Russian assets in the amount of about $20 billion.

In the West, discussions continue on the possibility of confiscating Russian assets and sending them to the reconstruction of Ukraine, Foreign Minister Liz Truss said earlier: “This is an issue that we are working on together with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Finance, but I certainly agree with the concept. We just need to figure out the details."

Russia calls the sanctions illegal, and compares the seizure of Russian assets to theft. Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed out that "theft of other people's assets" would lead to problems for those involved in it. Senator Andrei Klishas allowed a mirror response if the West decides to confiscate them. The Ministry of Finance expressed the opinion that Western countries do not have a consolidated position on this issue.
