Macron Promises Joint Sanctions with US Against Russia Over Ukraine

Europe and the United States will impose sanctions against Russia if it abandons peace initiatives, French President Emmanuel Macron said after talks between the “coalition of the willing,” the Ukrainian and American sides.

"If Russia continues to refuse concrete peace talks <...>, then we will adopt additional sanctions together with the United States and give clear answers to this refusal to move forward," Macron said, TF1-info reports.

He specified that this is about coordinating actions within the framework of "primary and secondary" sanctions. The president also added that work on including the United States in providing security guarantees for Ukraine will be completed. In total, according to him, 26 countries have assumed obligations within the framework of a possible mission on the territory of the country.

According to dataREUTERS , US President Donald Trump, who participated in these negotiations via video link, demanded that the Europeans stop buying oil from Russia; these trade operations brought Moscow €1.1 billion in a year, an unnamed White House official told Reuters. As Reuters reports, the US president also demanded that the EU put pressure on China for supporting Russia. NYP wrote that Trump would like Europe to join the US measures against those countries that buy from Russiaoil . Before these measures were introduced, Washington assumed that tariffs would be increased for Beijing as well.

Trump has repeatedly mentioned the possibility of introducing new sanctions against Russia. Earlier this week, he threatened that if there is no progress in the peace process, the US will take a “different position.”

Russia considers Western sanctions illegitimate and demands that they be lifted. Presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said that US demands to end trade relations with Russia, including oil supplies, are illegal threats.
