Olympic champion in artistic gymnastics Nikita Nagorny and grandmaster Sergey Karyakin were included in the 16th sanctions list of the European Union. The EU accused the athletes of supporting policies that undermine the territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine.
Nagorny is also under sanctions by the United States , the United Kingdom , and CANADA. He is the deputy chairman of the board of the Movement of the First and vice president of the Russian Gymnastics Federation, and until November 2024, he was the chief of staff of the Russian patriotic movement Yunarmiya.
A native of Simferopol, Karjakin played for Ukraine until 2009, and then received Russian citizenship. In September 2024, he became a senator from Crimea. In March 2022, Karjakin was suspended for six months by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) for supporting the military operation in Ukraine .
The European Union approved the 16th package of sanctions against RUSSIA on February 24, the third anniversary of the start of hostilities. The sanctions list includes 48 people and 35 organizations. The press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov , said that Moscow was not surprised by the expansion of the blacklists. The Russian authorities consider Western sanctions illegal.
Which sports figures were included in the sanctions lists?After the start of the military operation in Ukraine, the HEAD of the Russian Hockey Federation and State Duma deputy Vladislav Tretiak fell under sanctions from the European Union, Great Britain, Switzerland, Australia, the United States and a number of other countries. Also, the honorary president of the Russian Olympic Committee Alexander Zhukov is under personal sanctions from the EU, Great Britain, the United States and a number of other countries.
In 2022, a number of countries, including Great Britain , Canada , the European Union, Switzerland , Australia and the United States, imposed sanctions against the chairperson of the board of directors of the National Media Group holding, Olympic champion Alina Kabaeva .
Sanctions were also imposed against three-time Olympic champion in Greco-Roman wrestling, Senator Alexander Karelin , and Olympic champion in speed skating, deputy Svetlana Zhurova (United Russia).
On June 24, 2024 , the European Union announced the 14th package of sanctions against Russia, which also mentioned three-time Olympic synchronized swimming champion, Moscow City Duma deputy and TV presenter Maria Kiseleva. The EU statement said that the former athlete was included in the list for participating in events of the All-Russian People's Front and supporting the military operation in Ukraine, including visits to new regions and participation as a Moscow City Duma deputy in expanding social support measures for the military.
Russian businessman Alisher Usmanov has headed the International Fencing Federation (FIE) since 2008. In November 2021, he was re-elected as president of the federation for a new term (he was the only candidate). However, in March 2022, he suspended his powers due to sanctions imposed on him by the European Union. Since then, Emmanuel Katsiadakis has been acting president of the FIE. In November 2024, Usmanov was again elected head of the FIE. He was supported by fencing federations from more than 100 countries. However, in December 2024, the businessman voluntarily suspended his powers "in order to ensure the effective operation of the federation."
In 2022, the head of the Russian Triathlon Federation, Ksenia Shoigu, was included in the sanctions list of Japan and the United States, and in 2023, sanctions were imposed by Ukraine. The daughter of former Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, who now holds the post of Secretary of the Security Council of Russia, has headed the RTF since late 2020. Also, 34-year-old Ksenia Shoigu heads the League of Heroes organization, which holds mass sports events.
The authorities of Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand have added the head of the Russian Football Union, Alexander Dyukov , to their sanctions lists. In August 2022, due to the sanctions, Dyukov was stripped of the state award "Order of the Star of Italy".
Vice-President of the Russian Judo Federation and owner of the Sochi football club Boris Rotenberg has been sanctioned by the UK, Canada, the US, the EU, Switzerland, Japan, Ukraine and New Zealand. In addition, his son, former football player of Moscow Lokomotiv Boris Rotenberg Jr. , was included in the sanctions lists of the UK, the US, Canada, Japan and Ukraine .
Nikita Mazepin , a racing driver and son of businessman Dmitry Mazepin, was under European sanctions since March 2022. He was removed from the list in September 2024.
