Norway checks the goods that go, including to the Russian village of Barentsburg, for the presence of sanctioned goods, Andrey Chemerilo, Consul General of RUSSIA in the Svalbard archipelago, told RIA Novosti.

“All cargo crossing the Norwegian border is accordingly inspected by Norwegian customs immediately upon crossing the border in the usual manner. Including for the presence of “sanctioned goods,” the consul said.

According to the diplomat, the same is happening with the cargoes of the Russian Arktikugol trust, which are delivered to Barentsburg by Norwegian carriers.

Norway joined the anti-Russian sanctions in March of this year. At the end of June, she refused to exclude supplies for Russian settlements on Svalbard from European sanctions. At that time, Arktikugol asked that 20 tons of food be allowed across the border for the miners living in Barentsburg (in total, about 500 people, including consular employees).

Norway missed two containers for the Russian settlement on Svalbard Politics

The Russian Foreign Ministry urged Oslo to resolve the situation as soon as possible and threatened with retaliatory measures. State Duma deputies, in particular, proposed to denounce the agreement between the two countries on cooperation in the Barents Sea and the Arctic Ocean.

The Norwegian Foreign Ministry later replied that Oslo was not going to cut off the supply of Russian cargo to the archipelago. In early July, Norway agreed with Russia that its cargo company would transport goods to Svalbard. Prior to this, the Russian settlement was supplied by the only cargo ship Bring, which carried goods from Murmansk.

On July 6, a ship with cargoes for Barentsburg left the port of Tromsø. As the Norwegian TV channel NRK specified with reference to the country's Foreign Ministry, they were supposed to be transported to the Norwegian village of Longyearbyen on the same island, and then delivered to the village by water or air. There is no road between the two settlements. On July 8, the ship Norbjorn arrived in Barentsburg with critical cargo.
