The Chinese authorities have imposed sanctions against the American Hudson University, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and the leadership of both organizations. it is reported by AP with reference to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of CHINA.
The reason was the issuance of US transit permits for Taiwanese chief of staff Tsai Ing-wen on March 29-31 and April 4-6 to participate in political events. Beijing said that Washington provided "a platform and convenience for participating in separatist activities." Thus, according to the PRC, the United States "seriously violated the principle of" one China "and the provisions of the three joint Chinese-American communiqués."
The Chinese Taiwan Affairs Administration also announced sanctions against the representative of the republic in the United States, Xiao Bi-Him. Both she and family members were banned from entering mainland China, Hong Kong and the Macau Special Administrative Region, CNA reports.
The sanctions followed a visit to the US by Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen. On April 4, she flew to Los Angeles and met with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. The meeting was held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.
China does not recognize the independence of Taiwan and considers the island as its territory. Any contact between officials and the Taiwanese administration is viewed by Beijing as an encroachment on Chinese sovereignty and interference in internal affairs.
The US authorities have repeatedly emphasized that the United States adheres to the principle of "one China" and does not advocate the independence of Taiwan. At the same time, Washington continues to maintain contacts with Taipei.
