CHINA expressed strong protest in connection with the EU's proposal to introduce trade restrictions against three Chinese companies working with Russia, Bloomberg reports, citing a statement by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
“China resolutely opposes illegal sanctions <...> against the PRC caused by China’s cooperation with Russia,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The Foreign Ministry noted that Beijing is ready to take measures to protect the rights and interests of its companies. “Chinese and Russian enterprises carry out normal exchanges and cooperation and do not target third parties, and should not be subject to interference or influence from third parties,” the ministry emphasized.
The day before, Bloomberg reported that the EU proposed introducing new trade restrictions for about two dozen firms, including three based in China, which were suspected of supporting Russia's military actions in Ukraine . As the agency noted, if sanctions were adopted, this would be the first case of direct EU restrictions against Chinese companies since the beginning of the Russian special operation in Ukraine.
In addition to Chinese companies, the list also included firms from Hong Kong, Serbia, India and Turkey, Bloomberg wrote with reference to the document. At the same time, the agency refused to disclose the names of the companies “for legal reasons.” The sanctions will prohibit European companies from trading with those on the list.
Back in May, the European Union proposed extending sanctions to Chinese companies allegedly supplying Russia with prohibited goods and technologies. However, Bloomberg recalls, the initiative was then removed from the agenda due to the resistance of several EU member states and guarantees from China not to supply weapons to Moscow.
