CANADA has imposed new sanctions against RUSSIA due to human rights violations. This was reported by REUTERS, citing a statement by the Canadian Foreign Ministry.
The new restrictions target 33 current or former high-ranking Russian officials and six organizations involved in alleged "systematic human rights violations" against Russian citizens who have spoken out against the operation in Ukraine. The agency does not give names or titles.

In addition, 22 people from Iran were blacklisted by Canada. Among them are high-ranking officials of the judiciary, the penitentiary system and law enforcement agencies, as well as political leaders. Since September, there have been protests against the government in the republic, the reason for which was the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini after she was detained by the morality police for wearing the wrong hijab. On December 8, a protester was executed in Iran.
Sanctions have also been imposed on 12 individuals and three entities from Myanmar who perform key functions on behalf of the armed forces, facilitate the supply of weapons to the armed forces and allow the military to resort to violence. A coup took place in Myanmar in 2021, as a result of which the military came to power. Western countries accused the new government of violating human rights and brutally suppressing protests.
Canada has repeatedly imposed sanctions against Russia since the start of a special military operation, most recently at the end of October. Then, Deputy Prime Ministers Alexander Novak and Denis Manturov, Energy Minister Nikolai Shulginov and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Gazprom Viktor Zubkov fell under restrictive measures. In total, more than 1,000 Russians are on the Canadian sanctions list.
