Canada imposed sanctions against the National Bank of Belarus and Belarusbank

CANADA imposed sanctions against nine Belarusian banks. The corresponding decision is published on the website of the government of the country.

The NATIONAL BANK of Belarus and the largest state and commercial banks of the country fell under the restrictions:

Belarusbank . Belagroprombank. BPS-Sberbank. Priorbank. Bank BelVEB. Belgazprombank . Bank VTB. Statusbank.

The Canadian authorities decided to strengthen the sanctions, as "the actions of the Republic of Belarus constitute a serious violation of international peace and security, which has led or may lead to a serious international crisis," the statement said.

The next expansion of sanctions against Belarus was announced by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Denis Shmyhal. He said that the restrictions are being introduced "for further pressure" on Belarus as a country - an ally of RUSSIA.

Canada imposed sanctions on MINSK back in 2020 amid protests in the country following the presidential election. In 2022, after the start of the Russian special operation, Ottawa tightened restrictions: 22 high-ranking employees of the Belarusian Ministry of Defense fell under sanctions in connection with the “regime involvement” of President ALEXANDER LUKASHENKO in the Russian military special operation in Ukraine . The sanctioned Belarusian citizens supported the fighting in Ukraine and allowed the country to be a “launching pad” for Russia, the Canadian Foreign Ministry said.
