Canada sends spy plane to Japan

Canadian authorities sent a CP-140 Aurora reconnaissance aircraft to Japan to monitor the implementation of UN Security Council sanctions against North Korea. This is stated in a press release from the Canadian Ministry of Defense.

"As part of Canada's strategy for action in the Indo-Pacific region, the deployment [of the aircraft] demonstrates Canada's unwavering commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region," the agency said.

For six weeks, CP-140 Aurora will monitor alleged UNSC maritime sanctions evasion activities, including transferring fuel and other goods from ship to ship.

To strengthen the Canadian military presence in the Indo-Pacific region, the frigate HMCS Montréal will depart with a CH-148 Cyclone helicopter on board. it will also oversee the implementation of sanctions against the DPRK.

Canadian National Defense Minister Anita Anand announced plans to increase the country's military presence in the Indo-Pacific region last November. According to her, in this way CANADA will strengthen relations in the field of security with its partners and allies. 

The Canadian military is participating in Operation NEON, which is designed to support UN Security Council sanctions against North Korea. The organization introduced them between 2006 and 2017 to force the DPRK to abandon its weapons of mass destruction programs.
