Foreigners have been granted an extension to pay for gas at other banks, including Gazprombank.

Putin extended permission for foreigners to pay for Russian gas through banks other than Gazprombank until the end of this year. The measure was introduced after GPB was placed under US sanctions and has been extended several times, most recently until October 1.

Foreign buyers will be able to pay for Russian gas supplies not only through Gazprombank but also through other banks until December 31, 2025. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree extending this arrangement . The document is posted on the legal acts publication portal.

Previously, this procedure was in effect until October 1.

Since the spring of 2022, Gazprombank has been used for ruble payments for gas to unfriendly countries. Following the start of the military operation in Ukraine and the imposition of sanctions, Gazprombank was one of the few major Russian banks through which US residents were allowed to conduct transactions.

Last November, Washington imposed sanctions against Gazprombank. Following this, Putin updated the payment procedure for Russian gas by foreigners. Gazprombank retains its status as an authorized bank, but payments can be made to another credit institution, including through intermediaries.

However, the obligations were considered fulfilled only when funds were transferred to the Russian gas supplier's (Gazprom) account at GPB. Starting in December 2024, according to Putin's decree, Gazprom's account at another credit institution will be suitable for payment. This measure has been extended several times.
