From August 8, the Estonian government introduced full customs control over citizens and cargo traveling from RUSSIA. Before this, it was carried out selectively.
For travelers crossing the border on foot, full customs controls will mean checking every person and their luggage. If a person crosses the border by car, both the vehicles themselves and the things inside will be checked.
As Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal clarified, the measure applies to the border points of Narva, Koidula and Luhamaa.
He explained this decision by saying that Estonia must do everything possible to prevent the transportation of sanctioned goods through the republic. He linked the decision to strengthen customs controls with “attempts at non-compliance with sanctions and the transportation of prohibited goods.”
The application of full customs control will increase the time of crossing the border, and the number of people who cross it will decrease, the Estonian government believes.
Russia condemns the imposition of sanctions by Western countries and considers them illegal.
