Bloomberg learned about the option of "extreme sanctions" for Russia
The US and UK are discussing additional sanctions against Russia for the use of chemical weapons, sources told Bloomberg. Measures being considered by Washington and London range from restrictions on "Russian oligarchs" to "extreme steps" - sanctions against Russia's sovereign debt.
One of the reasons for additional measures could be that Russia "continues to obstruct" the investigation into the poisoning of opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The basis for their introduction could be the Magnitsky Act, which allows sanctions to be imposed against individuals who, in the opinion of the US authorities, are involved in human rights violations or corruption. If Washington determines that Moscow has again violated the ban on the use of chemical weapons, President Joe Bidenwill also consider imposing sanctions on the Russian public debt, the agency's interlocutors say. The United States intends to impose such sanctions in cooperation with Europe. In 2018, when Washington was already considering the idea of imposing sanctions on Russian government debt, the US Treasury opposed this move because of its negative consequences for global financial markets. Now the Biden administration believes that the possible consequences of imposing sanctions on the Russian public debt will not be so serious. The Russian Ministry of Finance said in November 2020 that they consider this scenario unlikely.Biden's first sanctions against Russia. Main Politics
