The Economic Community of West African Countries (ECOWAS) has lifted sanctions against Niger imposed after the military coup in the republic, said the HEAD of the bloc Omar Allier Toure.
The restrictions included the closure of land and air borders, the cessation of all financial transactions with the republic, as well as the freezing of assets. They decided to remove them for “humanitarian reasons” in order to alleviate the suffering of citizens.
“There are individual sanctions that remain in force,” the head of ECOWAS emphasized ( quoted by France 24).
The coup in Niger took place on July 26. A group of military men from the presidential guard (later joined by the command of the country's armed forces) seized power.
The head of the guard, Abdurahman Chiani, declared himself the new head of state. He explained what was happening with the desire to fight corruption and theft of public funds. The rebels created their own government body - the National Council for the Defense of the Fatherland (CNSP) - and formed a transitional government .
The United States and the European Union condemned the coup, and ECOWAS threatened the junta with intervention and demanded the restoration of constitutional order. The Nigerian military refused to comply with this demand.
