The UN considers any measures aimed at establishing a ceasefire in Ukraine important, but such measures must comply with international law. This was stated at a press conference by the HEAD of the world organization, Antonio Guterres. His words are reported by TASS .
“We certainly need an immediate ceasefire that would pave the way for a political solution,” Guterres said, adding that “anything that can contribute to realizing these objectives will be important, as long as it is done in accordance with international law.”
Earlier, US President Donald Trump threatened to introduce new anti-Russian sanctions if Moscow and Washington do not make progress in resolving the Ukrainian conflict within 50 days.
Later, the Russian Foreign Ministry criticized the statement of the UN chief. The department noted that it showed "his political bias and short-sightedness," which are expressed "in practically blind support" of Ukraine. "They consistently hush up Kiev's flagrant violations of international humanitarian law or, at best, limit themselves to calls for both sides to exercise restraint," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
