Sanctions imposed on RUSSIA have seriously affected the country's logistics system, Transport Minister Vitaly Savelyev said during a visit to the Astrakhan region.

“Those sanctions that were imposed today on the Russian Federation practically broke all the logistics in our country. And we are forced to look for new logistics corridors,” he said (cited by Interfax).

Savelyev noted that the authorities are considering the North-South transport corridor, part of which are the Caspian ports of Astrakhan on the Volga, Olya on the Volga-Caspian Canal and Makhachkala in the Caspian Sea, to solve the problems that have arisen.

As part of the development of this transport corridor, the Karaozek checkpoint on the border between Russia and Kazakhstan will be reconstructed, the minister said. The HEAD of the Astrakhan region, Igor Babushkin, said that the depth of the Volga-Caspian canal will also be increased - up to 4.5 m, in order to increase the volume of cargo traffic through it.

“Of course, these are not only ports, but also approaches to ports, bridges and roads, we should not have bottlenecks that would not allow us to reorganize,” Savelyev emphasized.
