The head of the European Commission called the goal of the 11th package of sanctions against Russia

Ursula von der Leyen

The new package of EU sanctions against Russia will be aimed at combating the circumvention of measures already introduced against Moscow, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said at a press conference following the first day of the EU summit in Brussels. A video of her performance was posted on Twitter.

“The 11th package of sanctions will be mainly aimed at combating restriction circumvention, closing loopholes,” she said (quoted by TASS).

She did not name the timing of the introduction of a new package of sanctions.

The European Union has already imposed ten packages of sanctions against Russia. The last one was agreed on 25 February. Restrictions were imposed against 96 organizations, the Arabic service of RT and radio Sputnik banned broadcasting in the EU, and the lists of goods banned from export from Russia were expanded, including bitumen and rubber. In addition, Tinkoff Bank, Alfa-Bank, Rosbank, etc. fell under the new EU sanctions .

At a meeting on March 11, the head of the European Commission and US President Joe Biden agreed to "aggressively" prevent the circumvention of sanctions against Russia. In particular, the US and the EU decided that they would influence third countries so that they would not help Moscow in this.

Commenting on the imposition of sanctions on Russia, President Vladimir Putin said in February that "the Russian economy and governance system turned out to be much stronger than the West believed," and the restrictions ended up negatively affecting those countries that imposed them.
