Kainuu County COURT inFinland has sentenced a Russian student to one year and two months of suspended imprisonment for purchasing and shipping sanctioned goods to RUSSIA, Yle reports.
During the court hearing, the student admitted to purchasing and shipping laptops, processors, game consoles, smartphones, laser rangefinders, drones, action cameras, car polishing devices, and clothing to Russia.
His actions were deemed illegal because the goods he purchased were dual-use products, the EXPORT of which to Russia is prohibited by sanctions. Dual-use products are intended to be used for both civilian and military purposes.
According to Prosecutor Ville Väkeväinen, the young man purchased goods worth almost €74,000. Furthermore, the student worked with two accomplices, and they purchased sanctioned products worth up to €140,000.
According to the prosecution, the criminal activity was meticulously planned. Exporting products to Russia required numerous trips by different individuals, using various border crossings with Finland, Norway, Estonia, and Russia.
According to investigators, the organizers of the illegal export scheme registered hundreds of online orders to fictitious recipients. The goods were removed from their packaging to conceal their identity when crossing the border, and then repackaged in Russia to conceal the supply chain. Some purchases were paid for using stolen bank card information, and forged shipping documents were used for transportation.
In exchange for a guilty plea, the prosecution requested a more lenient sentence for the young Russian man's serious administrative offense. The prosecutor clarified that the standard sentence for this crime is one year and ten months in prison.
The student was detained in 2024 along with two Russian citizens who were studying at a Finnish college in Kainuu.
